The House of the Wolf - P13

  1. THE HOUSE OF THE WOLF: P13 A black ink and black color pencil drawing on a 11 x 14 size coquille board. This drawing combines two chapter heading icons from the book, "THE HOUSE OF THE WOLF," by Basil Copper; "Fear in the Night" and "Nadia".

An illustrator is obligated not to reveal in the artwork any surprises or secrets in the story, it spoils the reading experience. However, in this case the "werewolf" is no secret, it's given away in the title of the book. My concern when I was creating each of the 42 chapter icons, was not to reveal which of the guests in the castle was the werewolf.

If you don't mind, I will once again refer to William Faulkner's words about "writers" -

"I believe that man will not merely endure: he will prevail. He is immortal, not because he alone among the creatures has an inexhaustible voice, but because he has a soul, a spirit capable of compassion and sacrifice and endurance. The writer's duty is to write about these things. It is his privilege to help man endure by lifting his heart, by reminding him of the courage and honor and hope and pride and compassion and pity and sacrifice which have been the glory of his past. The poet's voice need not merely be the record of man, it can be one of the props, the pillars to help him endure and prevail."-
